What counts as an electrical emergency

An electrical emergency involves immediate safety hazards or an unexpected loss of essential power in your home. Common situations include:

  • Power lost to the whole home or part of it with no obvious cause
  • A burning smell from sockets, switches or the consumer unit
  • Sparking, buzzing or hot sockets
  • A consumer unit that keeps tripping
  • Damaged, exposed or water-affected cables
  • Lights that flicker or fail alongside a smell or heat

While you wait

If there is fire, smoke or anyone hurt, call 999 first.

If it is safe to do so, switch off the power at the consumer unit.

Keep away from sparking, wet or damaged electrics, and unplug nothing that is hot or wet.

Have your postcode and a short description of the problem ready when contacting us.
